Göteborg Book Fair - PERICLES panel & workshop - 22/09/2016

Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre Gothenburg, Sweden

The Göteborg Book Fair is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the world’s first Freedom of the Press Act by putting the annual focus on freedom of expression. The event will take place in on 22-25 September 2016 and will include an extensive number of seminars – with 821 participants from 38 countries – covering subjects within and beyond the condition for freedom of expression in Sweden and throughout the world.

On 22 September University of Borås will host two PERICLES events: a seminar on making accessible digital content to future generations with invited panelists from Sweden and a workshop presenting and demonstrating tools developed as part of the PERICLES project.

  • PERICLES panel: How can we access digital objects created 20 years ago and 100 years from now?

Time: 12:00- 12:45

Location: Svenska Mässan, Gothenburg, Sweden

Music, photographs, videos, scientific data and art are all examples of content which is now stored digitally. How are the institutions that are collecting enormous amounts of digital content – libraries, museums, archives and research institutes – going to make sure that the material is accessible in the future as well? 100 years from now, will we even know what an iPod was? If our grandchildren find a CD, will they be able to listen to the music stored on it? This will be a discussion based on the latest findings on digital preservation from the European scientific project PERICLES and the current experiences of major players in digital preservation.

With: Efstratios Kontopoulos, PERICLES researcher (CERTH-ITI, Center for Research & Technology Hellas), Christine Sauter, PERICLES Project Manager (King's College London), Maria Cavallin Aijmer, fil. dr. (Department of History Studies, University of Gothenburg), Sanja Halling (Digisam, Swedish National Archives), Peter Voisey (Findwise), Bengt Neiss (National Library of Sweden), Göran Kristiansson (Swedish National Archives, eARD project manager). Moderator: Nasrine Olson, (The Swedish School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS) at the University of Borås).
